Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Tom Petschek, 1932-2009

Former Saltaire Mayor 1966-1968. Trustee, fine gentleman and a scholar. Born in Berlin in 1932. Passed away in London, Dec. 6, 2009. Family man. Saltaire man. Regards and sympathy to his family.

HE
SLOWED DOWN MOSES:
During his time as trustee and Mayor he was particularly proud of his participation with many others, in stopping the Robert Moses Ocean Parkway from being extended along Fire Island and preserving the island's character.
Of historical interest, during this period, the bayfront bulkhead was extended from Atlantic to West Walk; Surf Walk was completed between harbor and lighthouse, and the kid's playground and the 'fifth' tennis court were built.
Most of all he just loved being in Saltaire
