Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

When We Said Mrs. Dobie was an Old Time Saltairian, We Were Not Kidding

Duncan Dobie's Grandma was married in Saltaire on the beach, as this NY Times Article from August 24, 1915 verifies. This kinda gives Duncan credentials as a long time Saltairian. They don't have elopements like this anymore.

My only question about this article. It said they were married on a "Fire Island Breakwater."

Any idea what the Times was talking about?

Jim-

I remember fondly,as do all we Saltaire children of the '50's, Duncan, his grandparents and cousin Bruce Guest. I too received a few e-mails from him expressing quite emotionally what a great experience it was growing up in Saltaire in the 50's. As I've told you and other's those days were one's of lost innocence that I do not believe could be replaced in today's turbulent times. Regarding Duncan's grandparents wedding - I do recall, sometime in the past year or so, seeing something about the wedding which I think(??) stated the ceremony took place around Lonelyville(??). I could be wrong but I'm sure Duncan could confirm it - and yes, after nearly 50 years it was an absolute delight hearing from him. Also, if my recollection serves me correct the next wedding of Saltairians were the Weidhof's(I/m sure i butchered the spelling)who were married sometime in 1920's. Fifty some years passed before the next Saltaire wedding - my own!

Mrs and Mr Keegan got married in Saltaire, didn't they??????

Jim -

Mr & Mrs Keegan may have been married there - it makes sense to me although I never remember our childhood friend Michael Keegan telling us that. All I remember is being told from some "old timers" that my wedding was the first since the Weidhof's - it's possible that mine was maybe the first in the "chocolate church" since the Weidhof's.

ADULTERY IS ALIVE AND WELL IN 1915 -

Read the corresponding article to the Dobie nuptials - it's laugh out loud funny. I wonder what Mrs. Lane was "holding" while her daughter held on to Mr Groll's horse??

Said article about Mabel, Little Gertrude and Mr. Groll is definitely LOL funny:

This is how it would play out today:

MABEL LANE TO LITTLE GERTRUDE: "Oh, Little Gertrude, would you be so kind as to go outside and hold Mr. Groll's Horse for a while?" Mr. Groll is sooooo tired from teaching physical culture. He has been sooooooo kind and he wants to tell Mommy stories about bareback riding."

LITTLE GERTRUDE: "No, Ma I want to watch Barney, not that smelly old horse."

MABEL LANE TO LITTLE GERTRUDE: " Listen kid, just get hell out of here for half an hour, or I will send you back to your father."

Bareback riding - kinky - I wonder if Mr. Groll had a riding crop to spank Mrs Lane with.

I thought this was a G rated web site
