Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Is that a motercycle on the dock behind the crowd?

It looks to me like a wheel on those big carts they used to bring stuff from the freight boat to the grocery store.

Zooming in on this image does not answer your question: too pixellated. We ask Justin to take a close look at the original postcard.

No I don't think so about the motorcycle- I think it is an old style big wheeled wagon.

How come in one picture the Saltaire has a smoke stack and in the other there is no smoke stack?

Looks to me that the Saltaire is much fresher looking in the photo WITH the smoke stack. So I guess it rusted and was tossed overboard at some point. It seems to me that there are many years between these two pics.

Good spot- never noticed the funnel midship not being there. The picture on top is dated 1926 via usps marking - the lower post card has a clean back.

Also notice the background of the Bay front- no bulkhead and see where the little dock is- it only looks like a swimming type dock not like the current dock is today and the location is much closer.

JUSTIN: YOU KNOW YOU HAVE AN EVEN CLEARER IMAGE OF THE WEST BAYFRONT WITH NO BULKHEAD-- WE ARE JUST HOLDING OFF ON POSTING IT FOR A FEW DAYS TO GET MORE HITS.
