Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

SAVE THIS SHIP. WEEKEND UPDATES NEEDED

CLICK ON COMMENTS BELOW AND LOOK AT THE COMMENTS BY LONG TIME SALTAIRIAN VINNY SAHI. WE ARE THE FIRST TO ADMIT WE SOMETIMES FOLLOWED THE STORY OF THE WRECK OF THE LE PAPILION SOMEWHAT WHIMSICALLY, BUT WE ALSO POINTED OUT THAT RIPPING OFF SHIPWRECKS ON FIRE ISLAND HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR CENTURIES. VINNY NOW TELLS US THERE IS AN UGLY UNDERBELLY TO THE LE PAPILLON STORY. THE RIPPERS-OFFERS OF FIRE ISLAND SHIP WRECKS OVER THE CENTURIES HAVE NOT BEEN "PIRATES" LIKE IN THE MOVIES: THEY HAVE BEEN OPPORTUNISTS AND EVERYDAY LOOTERS. YOU WHO ARE PRIVILEGED TO VISIT SALTAIRE THIS WEEKEND, PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK: HAS THIS VESSEL BEEN DAMAGED BY SOMETHING OTHER THAN MOTHER NATURE? IS THIS OK IN 2011? WHAT ARE YOU SEEING? CONFRONT ANYONE YOU SEE TRYING TO RIP IT OFF. --joh

They are going to attempt to drag it down the beach with some really heavy equipment and then load it on a trailer. Very nice family who owns the boat!! Like any lower species i.e. Vultures, Maggots etc. who pick the flesh off of semi-dead bodies... Some people from neighboring villages have attempted to swoop down and remove things in the middle of the night to put in their collection of crapy lawn ornaments. Any scum that would do that obviously has never been offshore in any real weather... and at the mercy of the spirit ocean gods!!!

We must build another OMO and send it out in return

While I agree that looting is reprehensible, i take exception to that comment that the looting was done by " people in neighboring villages." Who's to say that no one in Saltaire also took part, for that matter who cares where the looters came from.
IT IS BAD KARMA TO TAKE SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU.

I agree with Kate Skelly there. Only thing is I take Vinny's reference to "neighboring villages" to mean villages near the wreck site and since the wreck was on the beach, I would consider Saltaire a "neighboring village" to the beach site.
At any rate, objection noted.

Let us not forget the workers in and others driving up and down the beach.

@ vinnysahi - Please release the photos of the looters to the proper authorities. I have known the owner many years and he would be pleased to know who took the stuff and if returned would be even better. This incident really hit him hard. Betrayed by a son then to have your dream sailboat run aground then to be looted. Tsk, Tsk... Sail on Captain "Hurricane" Haney. - Jay

Their having trouble getting permits for the bridge. No one wants to sign off on that for now. Point loading is the issue. The other night someone took their 200lb anchor in the middle of the night!!

Looking thru the eyes of the capt and crew Fire Island aint a good place to be!
