Plundering and looting of shipwrecks along Fire Island was common, and scandalous. In fact over the years, it was not so much classic "pirates" as it was as opportunists who happened to be around. Here are a couple of stories about the wreck of the ELIZABETH, in 1850 on Fire Island, causing the death of Margaret Fuller (Ossoli), her child and her husband. At the time of her death, Ms. Fuller was one of the most well known women in America.
Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)
