i've read that, like coney island, it was named by the dutch, who counted the barrier beach we call "fire island" as four separate islands. in dutch this would be "vier eilanden," which the english transliterated as "fire island" the dutch referred to our "coney" as "konijn eilandt" for all the rabbits they found there.
