Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Compare this Aerial Photo of Saltaire, taken @ 1920, with the Gary Gleuckert pictures looking in roughly the same directions, 90 years later, in the winter of 2009-2010:

The 1920 photo is a postcard entitled " Aereal view of south side of Saltaire looking West." Note the lighthouse in the distance. Similarly, note the lighthouse in the 2010 Gleuckert photos.

In the 1920 pix, part of Ocean Promenade going toward West(?) Walk is on the far left of the image. To the far right is Lighthouse Prom. Gleuckert's image #6 looks dead on west down Lighthouse Prom

By counting walks from West Walk east, it appears that the closest north -south walk in the 1920 image is Neptune Walk (???). Gleuckerts pix are from somewhere around the same (??)

Hi Jim,Nice to hear from you. I would say that the location is pretty darn close. The 1920 shot looks like it is lower in altitude. It may actually be taken from roughly the same spot even though the 1920 shot may look closer. The reason for that is my lens is a wide angle (25mm) lens, which fits more in the picture but makes objects look as though hey are farther away then they really are. Cameras in the 1920's ( http://licm.org.uk/livingImage/1920Room.html ) typically had lenses that were more commonly up around the 100mm range, this would make things look closer. With these factors in consideration I would say that the photos may have been taken from the same spot, certainly close enough to call it the same perspective. It would be interesting to overlap the photos in photoshop.I was thinking of your idea last year about "a happening" and I think I may want to do something this summer with everyone on the beach. Do you think people would go for something like this and cooperate? What did you think of the new video? http://garyglueckert.smugmug.com/Aerial-Photo/Saltaire/10400937_ZKXh8#757408382_53cQy-M-LBThanks,Gary
