Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Jimmy whoever you are, I'm confused, is this really Saltaire, NY??
Where are those mountains in the distance?? and that valley between them?? I've never seen mountains when facing either Long Island or from the ocean beach. The sailing ships I've never seen them when I've been in Saltaire.

Poetic license, or maybe P.T. Barnum hype on the Part of Saltaire Construction Co. who apparently didn't last too long out there. They had trouble selling plots and houses; by 1916 the boardwalks were deteriorating and they had nobody to pay for them-- that is why they incorporated: so they could raise taxes for maintenence. They had public auctions for unused land in 1918 and in the 1920's.
The image you are talking about is similar to a postcard that I am posting above that ad.

Thank you Jimmy(whatever you last name is JOH?)for what I think is your response to my questions but your response opens up new questions, specifically -
With the current economy land values are plummetting and people are having trouble selling houses
The boardwalks and much more(store, water system, etc according to the Dec newsletter) are in deploreable condition) and it is therefore logical that taxes will have to be raised.
So what really has changed in 100 years other than the possible public auction of the village??

Well. there is no more Captain Al.

Hey Anonymous,

If you are so interested in everyone's names you should consider leaving your own.
And btw, real estate values are not exactly plummeting out here. As a matter of fact it is a pretty good time to consider a real estate purchase. That is if you can get a loan from one of our federally assisted banks.

Best to all and Happy New Year!

The mystery intensifies - I still don't know who Jimmy really is and as to Derf - I assume he's a Smurf(kind of catchy Derf the Smurf). Who is Captain Al?? Does he have any relationship with the Captain Al watermelon parties held by the SCAA or is he also an anonymous person??

Anonymous,

You seem to know far too much about Saltaire to be playing it so dumb. Do the smurf really exist? Maybe Saltaire has a smurf counterpart and the is a Derf Smurf?, and a Captain Al Smurf that had watermelon parties on his Birthday. Is it new years eve there too? If so, Happy New Year to the Saltaire Smurf.

I do know quite a bit about Saltaire as I have rented homes in both Kismet and Fair Harbor for a number of years. I've played Hoops at your b-ball court and have enrolled my kids in your recreation program. I have found it beneficial to use the services your village provides. I have often considered either renting or buying a home in Saltaire as it appears to be probably the nicest community on the island.
