Here is everybody's assignment for Thanksgiving weekend:
Now that we have exhausted everybody's recollections of Harper Lee in Saltaire, how about a few people writing us their favorite stories about:
The Labor Day Shows.
Just click on comments below and we'll post 'em.
Important msg. to Betty Galt: your terriffic post about Labor Day shows was inadvertently erased while we were posting it. Please re send. Apologies. --JOH

why not try a different subject since there seems to be no story tellers of Labor Day Shows -- try police chief stories.

Officer Hose
Remember officer Hose? Really
-JOH
Gotcha - Hose was NOT a Saltaire Security officer
Officer Barton Hose was in fact a Suffolk Co. Marine Police Officer in the 1960's. He was assigned to SCPD boat J. He advanced quite far up the food chain in the SCPD. He died at a relatively young age of cancer. The current SCPD boat that patrols the Great South Bay is named the "Officer Barton J Hose"
Bart Hose was very much the "Officer and a Gentleman". His service to Fire Island was commemorated, along with Norma Ervin and Capt. Patterson at the relighting of the Fire Island Lighthouse.
I gained great respect for him when the group of "Emergency Responders" made up of law enforcement personnel from FINS, Suffolk, Islip, the 2 Villages and a few others decided to stage a drill involving the ditching of a 747 in the Bay. He was the only one who thought that the ferry company should be involved in the scenario of rescuing 500 people from the water.
We became great friends, but for far too short a time.
The Labor Day Show!
The Labor Day Show!
Welcome to the Labor Day Show!
How could summer go so fast?
When we turn around it’s past!
And every year again,
And at each summer’s end,
The Labor Day Show!
In preparing for the Labor Day Show, we took the ferry to the mainland and went to Pandora’s Box (a thrift store), to buy a wedding gown for Jean Campbell. She wore that spectacular gown in the Labor Day Show as she belted out Wedding Bell Blues. It was fantastic!
