Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

"THERE COULDN'T BE A MORE BEAUTIFUL SOUND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT"

As Related at the re-dedication of the Bell at St. Andrew's on August 8, 2009:

Sally Ludlow relates that Saltaire's straight-laced* Mayor of Saltaire in the 1950's, John Ludlow summoned the St. Andrew's pastor, Rev. Canon Good, to discuss what could be done about the mischievous bell-ringing in the wee hours. It was driving John Ludlow crazy.

"Why, I believe there couldn't be a more beautiful sound in the middle of the night," said the Rev. Canon Good."I love to be awakened that way."

*Straight laced or not, we have enormous respect for ol Mayor Ludlow-- he led us wisely and calmly through the polio epidemic of 1954. See: http://saltaire38.blogspot.com/search?q=New+York+Stock+Exchange
