Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

This photo was taken @ the Saltaire Terminal in Bay Shore, behind the wheelhouse of the Fire Islander are the garages that once stood to house the cars. Torn down late 1960's is my guess.
Forgot to answer your first question-
Captain Al Skinner
Watch your language, anon.
The only thing behind the wheelhouse in this picture is Capt Al and parts of 2 other human beings.
In actual fact the person in the captains hat is Albert F Skinner - and NO that is NOT a beer belly - Capt Al, at the time, was pregnant with the future captain of the Fire Islander and owner of FI Ferries - Frank Mina!!
Kudo's to the "blogger' that correctly identified the old metal garages that used to be in the Saltaire parking lot. They were in fact demolished in the early 60's much to the chagrin of the Suffolk Co PD who used to park their squad cars behind them while they took naps.
