Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

CALLING ALL LIFEGUARD STORIES

OCEAN LIFEGUARDS FROM THE 1930’S TO TODAY

Chief Lifeguard Rich Wilde has come up with a list of every Ocean Lifeguard going back to the 1930’s.

We could use some help with this to help generate stories, and at the same time help Rich get an accurate list.

The list is not necessarily complete; there may have been some names overlooked or even misspelled.

We publish the list to bring back memories and stories of any of these lifeguards or stories or photos.

So use this list to help Rich complete his list or correct spellings, and for Saltaire38.blogspot.com to collect stories and pictures. Let us know any thoughts that come to your mind as you go over this list.

I worked as the relief guard the summers of 1961 through 1965.I worked the Head guard's lunch period and on busy weekends as needed. We were paid by the Village, and not a great deal.As an aside I was the bay lifeguard the summer of 1960 and was paid $100.00 for the entire season. To the best of my knowledge, my brother John was not a lifeguard for the Village.

Ocean Lifeguards Jen.

Perhaps someone else would like to tackle the Bay Guard roster.

Bay life guards would be hard to trackdown from 1950s-1960's because there were not many permanently assigned bay life guards. The camp counselors had to lifeguard at the bay, you usually had about 2 or so hours per week

I can confirm some names, add some, and correct dates. Kathy Koeniges, Paul Mastronardi, Tom Sconzo, Dan Mindich, Brian Braddish and Mike McGowan all worked in the 1980's. I'd like it known that I, Tom Sconzo, was chief in 1987 and Herc worked under me. This is fact but be careful about mentioning this to the big man. This has angered him his whole life.

Paul Mastronardi was the chief lifeguard in 1988 - 1989, and Jim Nickerson was also working during that time period.
I really enjoyed my experience at Salt Aire working for Chuck Jones.
Best job, 2 great summers, sand between the toes.

Hi Rich Wilde. Mike from Hauppauge here. Scott was an Ocean lifeguard and I don't see his name. Contact Lisa or myself on FB

The "Sturman" mentioned in the unconfirmed would have been Bruce Sturman and he would have guarded in the 60's. The Sturman's were friends of the Standards. Bruce was a counselor of mine back then. I remember his parents had a huge cabin cruiser type yacht that they moored in the cove. Biggest boat around at that time.

John Hill needs to be in the 70's. Hill started a year or two before me and I was late 70's. I assume the timing is based on start of career?

Chris Sconzo needs to be added to the 70's. Tom Sconzo was 80's.

I am pretty sure Melissa Gowan guarded on the Ocean, at the least as a late summer fill-in from the bay.
