Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

The short, bewildering war had followed, the war of which no history had been written or ever would be written now, that had flared all around the northern hemisphere and had died away with the last seismic record of explosion on the thirty-seventh day.

He stared across the crowded restaurant. “I’m going home quite soon,” he said. “I’ve been away a long time, but it’s nearly over now. You know the way it is. I’ve got a wife at home I love, and I’ve played straight with her the two years that I’ve been away. I wouldn’t want to spoil that now, these last few days.”

“I know, “she said. “I’ve known that all the time.” She was silent for a minute. “I wouldn’t want to start a smutty love affair when I’m dying in a week or ten days’ time. I’ve got some standards too- now, anyway.”

He smiled at her. …

She raised her head. “I’d like to come and see you in America one day,” she said. “I want to meet Sharon—if she’d want to meet me.”

“She’ll want to meet you,” he said. “I’d say she’s kind of grateful to you now, already.”

“I’ll just come for an afternoon,” she said thoughtfully. “I want to see Helen jumping around on that pogo stick. But after that, I think I’d better come back here.”

...Emily’s mother calls the children to breakfast. Emily is surprised at how young her mother looks. Emily cries out: ‘I can’t bear it. They’re so young and beautiful. Why did they ever have to get old? I can’t look at everything hard enough. ”
Emily comes downstairs; her mother says: “Birthday or no birthday, I want you to eat your breakfast good and slow. ”
Emily: “Oh, Mama, just look at me one minute as though you really saw me . ”
Emily turns to the Stage Manager: “I can’t go on. It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another ”

We've known each other since we were nine or ten

Together we climed dunes and trees
Learned of love and ABCs
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach.

Brel/McKuen "Le Moribund- the Dying Man" trl. to English as seasons in teh sun"

This is all getting a little to heavy for me to absorb--but have you ever really "looked at a flower"?--that's so close to reality it frightens me, either on the beach or off.
