Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Come on this is an easy one -

The kid well known in outdoors and hunting publications - it's our current vice president - Dick Cheney

The other tyke - Jeff Weindlandt

In this picture, dated 1955, young Dick was just showing Jeff how to shoot endangered species such as Osprey's and piping plover from the aft deck of the Fire Islander. Capt Al, probably one of the preeminent "poachers" on the south shore of LI, supplied them with the shotgun and shells.

Beaver,

In 1955 DDT had killed all the ospreys, all the piping plovers, and all the cranberries and beach plums that surrounded your parents' house before they built it. Meanwhile, Capt Al was down at you know who's wife's house, pretending to play the accordion. Don't blame Uncle Dick...the only Uncle we had bewgan his first name with a "P".

Responding to Jeff -
In actual fact the beach plum bushes which surrounded our house and the cranberry bog that was in our lots immediately to the south existed into the 1970's. My mother used to make beach plum jam(which I detested) every summer. I believe that most of the beach plum bushes on FI were killed by a blight which infected them much the same as the blight that killed most of the Japanese(??) pines that were planted after the '38 hurricane. Osprey's - while working with Capt Al we'd see one evry so often. Piping plover - they are delicious - they taste something like Rock Cornish game hens.

bEAVER:

DID YOU SAY THAT THERE WAS A CARBERRY BLOG TO THE SOUTH OF YOUR HOUSE????

YOU ARE LOSING IT BEAVER: THE O'SHEAS LIVED ON THE BAYFRONT.

Jim -

Admittedly, I may to you be an intellectual Philistine but I distinctly stated that the CRANBERRY BOG was on our property to the south of our house.

The CARBERRY BOG was on the property we own to the NORTH of the house.
