Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

I for one am for the bamboo. As everyone knows they are the direct descendants of the bamboo poles that Uncle Pete used to use to teach us how to swim. Those bamboo have inherited Uncle Pete's magic power, and any army that marches carrying a ten foot bamboo stalk from Saltaire is invincible.

One of my fondest memories of the terror Uncle Pete could instill in kids(primarily myself and Mike Keegan)during swimming lessons has a bamboo twist to it.

In the late 50's there was a Brennan family who rented a house for a summer or two. They had a daughter named Betsy - well one day out on the little swimming dock Uncle Pete was trying to teach her how to dive into the water. He'd hold his bamboo stick out aways and tell her to brace herself and dive over the stick. Well for some inexplicable reason(abject terror comes to mind) she was deathly afraid to do it. She starts crying and Uncle Pete, in a rare display of emotion, starts to get mad. He tells her to stop crying and just dive over the bamboo pole. This sends her into absolute hysteria. At this point Uncle Pete lost it - he starts slamming the stick on the dock and water and pieces of it are flying every which way - a truly unforgetaable moment! Uncle Pete was a truly great positive influence on the lives of all of us kids that grew up during his tenure. A great teacher and a truly wonderful person.
