Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Memo to PW: How could B.W. take pictures like this with just one arm?

Hey Phil Keane: did you have a broken arm in the summer of 1961???.

We all remember Blervin's (Although the precise year eludes me. We were playing speed ball, an Uncle Pete variant of soccer. J.O. was counselor and officiating. As we were runing forward with the ball somebody clipped Blervin from behind. As he fell, his elbow hit the turf but his hand was on top of the soccer ball and his forearm snapped in two. "Crack." I still hear that sound. Norma and Capt. Al took him over to Bayshore in an emergency run of the Islander.) The injury never set Bill back. He went on to be a great guitarist and photog.

At any rate, speaking of broken arms, who is that kid with a broken arm in the above 1961 Bill Weinlandt Photo? Looks like Phil, but I don't remember any "cracking" sound from his arm.

What say you, Phil?

As for the rest of the kids in the picture, I'm not telling.

JOH

Phil, another talented photog, responds:
"That might be me. Just not as good lookin as I remember. I broke my arm the same summer the Slip n' Slide came out. By the end of the summer my cast was just pulp. I broke it on the mainland, bicycle racing. " --Phil Keane Jr.

#1) Jim - stop criticizing Priscilla Weinlandt for her failing memory - if she insists on remembering her father as only having one arm just let her live with that memory. She remembers him as having one arm the rest of us remember him as having two

Identities - I'd go with Phil Keane Jr. as to the young stud with the broken arm. Kenny O'Hare is standing behind him. Bill "Stingy"bauer is sitting on the boat next to the most easy to identify "tyke" from the 50's and 60's - our own version of Eddie Haskell - Larry Lynch!
Sitting on the bulkhead - the Easter Bunny??

Beaver reports:

"I can now also recall almost the exact the place on the field and the sound of when Blervin broke his wrist - brother Noel was also evacuated by ferry one rainy fall evening when while riding his bike he slid off a wet boardwalk breaking his arm. This however was after he had been taken in Charlie Rich's old Blue Model A to be seen by a doctor in OB.

JOH Responds:

Beaver:
you can remember exactly where in the field Blervin fell: is that because you were the guy that clipped him from behind?

I remember the exact spot too: we were heading north on the left wing, 60 FEET south south east of the Arts and craft shed.

I WANT AN ARTS AND CRAFT SHED STORY. "SHACKIN UP WITH MRS. K." WHAT PRICELESS TRINKETS ARE STILL KICKING AROUND YOUR HOUSE???????????????????????????

Next broken arm: I REMEMBER WHERE NICKY JAWORSKI BROKE HIS ARM. WHO ELSE DOES????????????????(I DID NOT WITNESS IT, HOWEVER)

JOH sez

Beaver: you are criticizing me for "criticizing" Priscilla when you had the nerve to insult her the first time in you life you ever communicated with her???

With reference to the Pic in front of O'Shea's: that was obviously a pooint of great embarcations: for instance to Lord of the Fire Island Flies and lots of Sailing O'Shea take offs.

But your memory is failing fast:
YOU ARE SO WRONG ABOUT THE KIDS IN THE PHOTO IN FRONT OF O'SHEAS. YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT ABOUT THE OBSCURED KENNY O'HARE BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY HE WOULD BE THERE WITH THOSE KIDS.

MOST OF ALL, I HAVE BEEN PROMISING YOU WE WOULD POST A PICTURE OF A CERTAIN RELATIVE OF A DICKLESS TRACY, BUT YOU MISSED HIM.

NICKY YAWORSKI -

Nicky, for those that remember him, was the son of VOS maintenance worker Pete Yaworski -

JOH and my most vivid memory of Nicky occurred one fall morning - we were in the field and Nicky rode by on his bike - he's dressed in a Zorro costume, he's holding wooden sword above his head, and singing "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" at the top of his lungs.

From that day forward we referred to him as "CRAZY KID"

Today he's probably the CEO of a Fortune 500 Company - or a member of Congress
