Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

Auction Sale, 1928

Here is a bit of useless trivia: in this 1928 Auction Announcement, under "What Saltaire Boasts Of" it lists "Its excellent stores which supply groceries, vegetables," etc etc. The 1922 Aution announcement has the same general description of "What Saltaire Offers," but it refers to the stores as a "Cooperative Store." So some time between 1922 and 1928 the Grocery store was privatized.

I am a newcomer to the village and I would like to know when they plan to build the proposed road?
I think it is an excellent idea as you could then have year round access to your home.

Also, I would like to know where the high class, refined people referred to in the brochure reside.

Dear Newcomer:

You are right: I have been talking about paving Fire Island for nigh on 75 years now. I always wanted to destroy Saltaire to save it. But now that Saltaire is sinking into the marsh, it is is too late now. This is my revenge.

Why, Mr. Moses, do you want to destroy the village?

How could your home be washed away in a storm - don't the beach renourishment projects prevent this from happening?

I want to destroy the Village in order to save its heart and soul.
