Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

These postcards show East and West from the same point. What year?
We don't know.
Who knows?

Classic bayfront shots. Never saw the one on the right that includes our house (O'Shea's - the second from right). I put that at about 1917 to 1920. Comparing it to a pic I have from 1913 or so, the Schmidt and Weidhoff houses are now up and the addition to the back of our home is complete, including a chimney in the back room. Thanks Justin, I'd like to work with you to get a good internegative made up of that one, strictly for interfamily use.

listen folks:

if the picture East was in about 1917-1920 why would the photographer crop out the Casino?

Also: when was teh "Hilton" house built-- ti is totally different architecturally than a Coffey House.

Denis: send us your 1913 photo when you get a chance.
