Any idea of the date of the postcard?? It's got to be fairly early because there are dunes - I think Frank said the dunes were leveled in the late 20's early 30's so that one could have an unobstructed view of the ocean?
JOH: I always assumed that the dunes were plowed down in Saltaire's very earliest days by the Fire Island Construction Company--not in the 1920's or 1930's. Quick, somebody somebody check this out before there is nobody left to ask.
I thought the '38 storm took down the dunes and that last walk on top of the dunes. Naturally I no longer remember the NAME of that walk, but I am sure you all do, and it continued on maps long after it was gone.
Interesting that the vegetation in the 1938 film looks like the current vegetation--highly overgrown. My uncle Frank always said it was getting too tall and needed another hurricane.
THANKS guys for doing this. Another post to come in the future. Saltaire is still my hometown as well, though I haven't been there for (six?) years or so. My children all talk about it even though they only had brief tastes of it.
