Could everyone write one simple essay about something that once happened in Saltaire…that they saw or were a part of…and put it on one big website? Somebody should collect a lot of stories before we all forget. Otherwise it is like a line in “On The Beach” : The history of the war that now would never be written.” -(JO'H)

"Fire Island Light" Wasn't Ony a Light "House"

detail from Bremen Poster

There was also the lightship "Fire Island."She saw service off Long Island 1930-1942.

The "Fire Island" showed up as a detail in several classic ocean liner posters from the glory days of ocean liner travel. We first noticed this in the Frank Braynard collection. Above is a poster for the North German LLoyd ship "Bremen" showing her speeding by the "FIRE ISLAND" on approach to New York. Notice the detail of the "Fire Island" from that poster. (We won't zoom in on the flag that the "Bremen" was flying. This was 1933, you know.)The second poster is for the White Star Line "Britannic" around 1934.

Speaking of the Braynards, now there's a couple we really miss. Frank spent a lifetime studying and talking about ships like these.

DID THEY CONVERT THE FIRE ISLAND LIGHTSHIP INTO THE OLD FERRY - THE FIRE ISLANDER?
