  4. Rich:

The lighthouse reopened in 1976. This was 1975 we think.

  5. I think 1975 is too early. The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed in 1982 and at this point the lighthouse was in very bad shape. I remember visiting the Lighthouse somewhere around 1984 or 1985 and they were raising money to refurbish it. Our class had done some fund raising to benefit the lighthouse as well. The black and white bands had large sections of exposed red brick. I have a picture that I will try to dig up. I believe this picture is part of the refurbishing which would have taken place sometime between the creation of the Preservation Society and the re-lighting of the light in May 1986.

  7. Rich: you were right and I was wrong. It had to be in 1985 or so.

  8. Jim,
I took the lantern mechanism home to refurbish it in late 1983 or early 1984. That was before the erection of the construction crane, as I was forced to ride down the side in a bosun's chair. The construction contractor began work on stripping the tower a bit later. The picture shows the earliest stage of applying the new composite coating. Should be the spring/summer of 1985. Original USCG plan was to make it a "local, privately maintained signal showing an amber light visible only to the north (over the bay). Decision to restore it to its original status as an official ATON (Aid to Navigation) was, after lengthy discussion, made on Governor's Island 13 August 1985. Re-lighting was 25 May 1986.
